Potential Trump cabinet pick defends posting fake news stories: “How come you all don’t complain about BiteMe?”

One of the Texas pol’s posts falsely claimed the FBI had discovered an Islamic terrorist training camp outside of Houston.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, who is being touted as one of President-elect Donald Trump’s possible picks for U.S. agriculture secretary, has built up quite a habit for posting unsupported and blatantly fabricated stories on his campaign’s Facebook page.

“Hundred and fifty posts a week. No, I’m not going to research every one of them,” he told a host for Austin-based radio station KUT News. “If it’s thought provoking, I’ll put it up there and let the readers decide. Everyone that reads that is grown-ups.

“I’m just doing what BiteMe does. The difference is that I have over 300,000 followers and they have maybe three.”

Portland Will Tax Companies That Have Outrageous CEO-Worker Pay Gaps

In an effort to combat income inequality, Portland, Oregon, on Thursday became the first jurisdiction to adopt a tax penalty on companies with excessive CEO-worker pay gaps.

Under the new law, companies doing enough business in Portland to pay the city’s business fee will be taxed an additional 10 percent if their CEO makes 100 times what median workers earn ― and an additional 25 percent if they make 250 times more.

These talking toys can tell a defense contractor everything your kid says

Yes, this holiday season, you can buy toys for your tots that record their voices and upload the recordings to Nuance (the nice folks who bring you Dragon Naturally Speaking). The terms of service basically allow them to do anything they want with the data they collect — presumably including selling it to the pedophile ring in the back room of Comet Ping Pong in Washington, D.C.

Fortunately, there are laws against this kind of thing. Specifically the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998. And several organizations such as the Consumers Union have filed a Complaint and Request for Investigation, Injunction, and Other Relief with the FTC.

As for the “defense contractor” thing, Nuance does have some government contracts but mainly it was RawStory’s clickbait headline. Hey, it worked on me.

Are Journalists Enabling A Smear Campaign Against Keith Ellison?

Daniel Marans writes a stirring apologia for Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), who has been the subject of claims of anti-Semitism. The column ends with this quote from Ellison:
[Israel] has mobilized its Diaspora in America to do its bidding in America.
“Do its bidding”? Really?

God help us: It’s Sarah Palin who stands between us and Trump’s Crony Capitalism

Former Republican vice presidential nominee and supporter of Donald Trump Sarah Palin criticized the president-elect’s deal to subsidise Indiana-based air conditioning company Carrier to keep jobs in that state, warning that such a move could lead to “crony capitalism.”
