Albuquerque firefighter Matthew Sanchez promoted for hanging up on 911 caller trying to save dying teen

Matthew Sanchez was working at the Albuquerque 911 dispatch center when he received a call from a woman who was performing CPR on a gunshot victim. Apparently the caller annoyed Sanchez, because he told her “OK, you know what ma’am, you could deal with it yourself. I’m not gonna deal with this, okay?”

Did Albuquerque Fire Chief David Downey punish Sanchez? No way! He promoted Sanchez to a job where Sanchez gets the same pay without having to do any work.

I don’t know about you, but I’d be willing to insult as many people as necessary to qualify for that swell gig.

Billionaires are working for you and me

In New York City, Uber is running television ads saying how they really care about people in minority neighborhoods and how they’re creating thousands of new jobs. Airbnb ran ads touting how they help little old ladies put their boychiks through college. And the Rent Stabilization Association (trade association of NYC landlords) ran ads telling how their real purpose is to create affordable housing.

Based on valuation by recent investors, Uber is worth about $50 billion and Airbnb is worth about $20 billion. The Rent Stabilization Association’s members control about a million apartments, worth in the tens of billions of dollars.

I’d say “bite me,” but first I have to go and throw up.

Donald Trump: John McCain “out of step” with today’s Republican leadership

Doubling down on his recent swiftboating of Sen. John McCain, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump charged that McCain is “out of step” with the leadership of the Republican party which is entirely made up of armchair hawks who never served in the military. “Would you want a President too dumb to get out of the draft?” asked Trump. He continued, “I’m the greatest American hero ever. I’m rich, I’m famous, I bang great-looking broads. I’m everything you want to be. That’s why I’ll make the best President since Ben Franklin!”

Ok, so I made this up. But let’s be honest — are you positive that Trump didn’t say it?

Congressman Carlos Curbelo gives the Left way too much credit

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Miami) thinks that Donald Trump’s bombastic presidential campaign may be a Democratic plot to make the Republican Party look bad.

The staff here at the BiteCastle loves conspiracy theories like this, but we’re wondering if Curbelo really thinks there are Democrats or Leftists smart enough to pull that off.

Bloomberg screwed up city housing; De Blasio hasn’t fixed it yet

The New York City Housing Authority repeatedly fixed the numbers in the their backlog of repair requests instead of actually fixing the problems, according to an audit by New York City Controller Scott Stringer.

The City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has been a disaster for years. Bloomberg had twelve years to get it right but neglected to even try. Now, City Controller Scott Stringer has revealed that Mayor De Blasio isn’t doing any better.

Melissa Mark-Viverito: Dumber than toast

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito vowed to create a citywide bail fund.

Because she thinks some people are being held on bail that’s too high, the Speaker of the New York City Council, Melissa Mark-Viverito, wants city taxpayers to pay their bail. That’s right, if her whack-a-doodle plan passes, some defendants will be able to skip bail without consequences.

Hey, Madam Speaker, bite me!

Texas wants to repatriate their gold bullion holdings but are unsure where to store the stuff

I think that Texas should ask Pastor James D. Alderdice for some guidance in this. According to his website, Pastor Alderdice was “co-founder of what was then [in the 1980s] the largest seller of gold and silver bullion in the U.S.”

The slope gets slippery — polyamorous marriages to be the next civil rights frontier

A Montana man said Wednesday that he was inspired by last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage to apply for a marriage license so that he can legally wed his second wife. “It’s about marriage equality,” Nathan Collier, of Billings, MT, told The Associated Press Wednesday.

. . . and the Bitemaster predicts many more such fights, ultimately including efforts to force clergy to perform weddings for gays and others.

How to improve NYC schools

Well, it’s that season again, where we struggle to understand what’s wrong with our schools, both in New York and nationally.

The Bitemaster first became interested in education policy by reading Fred and Grace Hechinger in The New York Times. More recently, the Bitemaster put forth his education manifesto and mocked Bloomberg’s education failures.

So where do we stand today?

Mayor De Blasio did hire Carmen Fariña, who was an outstanding school principal. But neither De Blasio nor Fariña know what they’re doing; they have no concept of the big picture. So it devolves to the Bitemaster to fix that.

  1. A school system of a million students cannot be run as a federation of little fiefdoms.
  2. It needs process control of the kind that industrial engineers design.
  3. It needs a clear definition of the kind of output the system should generate. E.g., what skills should a student demonstrate in order to be granted a high school diploma?
  4. It needs rigorous measurement (i.e., testing).

That’s the big picture. Now for some of the lesser items:

  • Parents don’t know much about education but have strong feelings anyway. We’ll need some political genius to convince parents to buy into a system where they will have no input.
  • Charter schools cannot scale up to a system that educates 1,000,000 children. Charter schools are divisive and a distraction.
  • Money is not the main problem. Bloomberg doubled the schools budget with no appreciable improvement.
  • Teachers are not the problem. There is no research demonstrating that NYC teachers are any worse than teachers elsewhere in the country.
  • Kids are not all the same. We need accelerated tracks for some children, remedial tracks for others, and vocational tracks for those who don’t have the aptitude for academics.
