Sen. Chuck Schumer flails around on the Syrian refugee question
Schumer is widely expected to become leader of Senate Democrats in the next Congress.
On Tuesday, Sen. Schumer said that temporarily rejecting Syrian refugees from entering the United States “may be necessary” in the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris.
On Thursday, after a national security briefing, Schumer said “What they [Executive branch terrorism experts? Left wing pundits? My cousin Vinnie?] showed us is this: There are about 2,000 refugees who have come here from Syria over the last four years. None have been arrested or deported for terrorism. None.”
Like the senator, I’m not sure where I stand on admitting Syrian refugees. But I’m just “some blogger,” not one of the most powerful members of the U.S. Senate.

40 percent of millennials favor restrictions on speech that is offensive to minorities
More than any other generation, Millennials are militant about the use of offensive language towards minorities, and are rejecting the idea of a blanket right to “free speech.” A Pew report published on Friday revealed that 40 percent of Millennials in America (aged 18 to 34) were in favor of the government limiting hateful speech offensive to minorities.
The First Amendment was written by old white men to protect the privileges of old white men like themselves. It’s time to fuck that white privilege and support the rage of oppressed women and minorities.

NRA wants EVERYBODY to have guns!
The NRA says it’s just trying to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens to buy guns — even if their names appear on a terror watch list.
Apparently the NRA has a non-discrimination policy when it comes to gun ownership. Current laws have allowed more than 2,000 suspects on the FBI’s Terror Watchlist to legally purchase weapons from 2004 and 2014, but the NRA is stalling a bill in Congress that would make it harder for people on the list to get guns.

Texas law leads to more attempts at self-induced abortions
A Texas law aimed at restricting abortions, which took effect in 2013, has led to more women trying to end a pregnancy on their own, while the number of clinical procedures in the state has declined, according to a study released on Tuesday.
And conservatives everywhere are thinking, “Thank God we’ve gone back to the good old days when poor women used coat hangers and the daughters of the rich were sent for a vacation at a ‘clinic’ in Switzerland.”

The NFL patriotism is bought and paid for by American taxpayers
Last week, a report released by U.S. Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain (R-AZ) revealed that the U.S. Department of Defense had paid the NFL $6.1 million from 2012 through 2015 for patriotic moments at games, including things like military appreciation nights and National Guards singing the National Anthem. Other sports leagues participated in paid patriotism as well, but the NFL was the league that profited the most.

Ben Carson actually says something interesting about Jeb Bush and the Terri Schiavo case
Asked about Bush’s intervention by the Tampa Bay Times on Friday, Carson said the governor [Jeb Bush] should have stayed out the Schiavo case.“I said at the time, ‘We face those kinds of issues all the time and while I don’t believe in euthanasia, you have to recognize that people that are in that condition do have a series of medical problems that occur that will take them out,’ ” Carson explained. “Your job is to keep them comfortable throughout that process and not to treat everything that comes up.”

It was probably back in 2001 that the Bitemaster opined that we need increased domestic surveillance to counter domestic terrorists and therefore the Bitemaster supported the Patriot Act. Prof. Hell shot back, “And they’ll abuse it.”
I think we were both right.
De Blasio wants NYCHA to evict criminals more quickly
A Mayor de Blasio spokeswoman told The News the mayor has ordered a overhaul to make it easier to evict criminal NYCHA tenants.
The policy of evicting criminals from New York City Housing Administration projects has been in place for years. But the City does more than just evict the criminal — they evict the family.
Which actually makes sense. If sonny-boy is dealing crack from his bedroom and he gets evicted, his mother will likely to let him back in. The only solution is to evict all the tenants of the apartment.
But here’s the rub: the evictees have to move somewhere. Maybe they’ll move into your subway station, into Central Park or perhaps they’ll squat in that empty building across the street from your condo.
It’s a real problem and De Blasio apparently hasn’t thought it through.
