Judicial restraint my ass

During oral argument in Shelby County v. Holder, Justice Antonin Scalia suggested that the continuation of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act represented the “perpetuation of racial entitlement,” saying that lawmakers had only voted to renew the act in 2006 because there wasn’t anything to be gained politically from voting against it.

“Whenever a society adopts racial entitlements” said Scalia, “it is very difficult to get out of them through the normal political processes.”

That’s judicial activism, designed to interfere with the political process — and Scalia can Bite Me.

Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes’ staffers illegally living out of state

DA Hynes is supposed to be enforcing the law, but he gives five of his prosecutors a pass when it comes to obeying the law — specifically County Law, Article 18, Sec. 702.6, which requires that Hynes’ Assistant DAs live in New York City.

Instead, Hynes has blithely given his top prosecutors permission to live out of state.

Source of Hagel internet rumor fesses up

Remember the game of Telephone? Well, Dan Friedman of the NY Daily News explains that he called a Republican aide on Capitol Hill with a question: Had Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel ever given a speech to, say, the Junior League of Hezbollah or the Friends of Hamas?

According to Friedman, the unnamed aide spread the question to Breitbart.com and from there it propagated throughout the right-wing blogosphere, whose paranoiacs will believe anything that reflects poorly on those with whom they disagree

Marco Rubio made gobs of money off of politics

Marco Rubio says “More government isn’t going to help you get ahead. It’s going to hold you back.”

But government has been very good to Marco Rubio.

In 2005, Rubio got a $300,000 job with Broad and Cassel, a large Miami law firm that had done millions of dollars of legal work for the Florida House.

Rubio earmarked money to Florida International University and later got an unadvertised job as a part-time professor at the school.

After appropriating millions of dollars to Miami Children’s and Jackson Memorial Hospitals, Rubio formed a lobby shop and got contracts with the hospitals.

It’s a degree of self-dealing that would make a Tammany apparatchik blush.

AJOTSCOTUS Scalia can Bite Me

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Antonin Scalia thinks the State of the Union is a “childish spectacle.” I mean, if it was so important, the Founders would have put it in the Constitution, right? [quoting from Above the Law]

Catholic Church Considering Jerry Sandusky as Next Pope

The Catholic Church is considering tapping convicted child rapist Jerry Sandusky as its next pope, The Daily Currant can reveal.

According to sources inside the Vatican, the Church believes the unorthodox move would aggressively rebut the “political correctness” of “secular elites” who in recent years have dared to challenge the institution’s rich tradition of systematically protecting child predators from justice.

I believe this is the first I’ve heard of The Daily Currant. These guys are so good, I’m considering retiring and leaving the snarky coverage of the news to them.

If I say that Joe Walsh is a deadbeat dad, he might sue me . . .

So let me be clear: Joe Walsh is not a deadbeat dad. He is, however, an asshole. Since losing his bid for reelection to Congress, the Tea Party darling has asked for a reduction in his child support payments because he cannot make as much money in the private sector as he did while sucking at the public teat.

Israelis claim new documentary as their own; directors start whining

In a genius PR move, the Israeli embassy has announced that “5 Broken Cameras, ” an Oscar-nominated documentary on Israel’s settlement expansion on the West Bank, is an Israeli film. In response, directors Emad Burnat (a Palestinian, whatever that means) and Guy Davidi (Israeli) claim “This is a Palestinian documentary” and that Israel is trying to use it “to show the good face of Israel.”

Donald Silverman nominated for first BiteMe Man of the Year

When Rabbi Yaakov Rosenblatt criticized comedian Sarah Silverman at JewishPress.com, Silverman’s father, Donald, rose to her defense:

“Hey a**hole: Daughter #1 [that’s Susan, Sarah’s older sister] is a rabbi. By the way, Sarah was also on the list [of The Jerusalem Post’s Most Influential Jews]. I missed your name. Oldest granddaughter is serving in the Israel Defense Forces. I’m sure you also served. Oh I forgot the Orthodox don’t do that. You don’t f*** with my family.”

Susan, who was recently arrested for praying at the Western Wall commented, “You can see where we get it from.”
