Greece is SO screwed

The Greek people are fed up with austerity — they’re sick and tired and won’t take it any more. But the country is broke after years of deficit spending and accounting shenanigans.

The “troika” (IMF, EU, and European Central Bank) are willing to lend Greece money but only on the condition of more austerity — which the Greeks won’t accept.

Greece is a net importer of oil — net imports stand at about 300,000 barrels of oil PER DAY. They have no nuclear power.

Someday soon, Greece will run out of money and default on their debt. When that happens, the lights will go out because they will have no way to pay for their oil.

Unemployment Rate Without Government Cuts Would Be 7.1%

The Wall Street Journal says “One reason the unemployment rate may have remained persistently high: The sharp cuts in state and local government spending in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, and the layoffs those cuts wrought.”

I remember that one cause of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s “Texas miracle” was the growth of government jobs in his state. And someone else — perhaps our bud MrMild — pointed out that conservatives have been cutting government jobs and then blaming Obama for the resulting unemployment.

Mitt Romney scores endorsement of General Admiral Aladeen of Wadiya

Along with the illustrious Ted Nugent, Mitt Romney now has the endorsement of General Admiral Aladeen, Dictator of Wadiya. Aladeen said in a press conference, “Mitchell Romney . . .has the makings of a great dictator. He is incredibly wealthy but pays no taxes. And it’s not much of a leap to go from firing people to firing squads.”

Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams responded, “While we don’t agree with every one of Dictator Aladeen’s remarks, we stand by his right to his opinions and are appreciative of all the support he has shown to Governor Romney.”

Ok, I admit that Williams never actually said that. But it sure sounds like the kind of wishy-washy statement Romney would issue.

Shameless Chris Christie calls teachers’ union bullies!

Again with the name calling, Chris! After establishing yourself as the Garden State’s biggest bully, you have the chutzpah to apply that label to others — just amazing.

And when asked about your children going to private school, you said it’s “none of your business.

Republicans complain that Obama accomplished the mission that Bush trumpeted

The Republicans are totally bent out of shape that Obama is taking credit for killing Bin Laden. Instead, they indulge in the fantasy that Bush did the job. Well, they can bite me.

[NB: The print edition of the Daily News ran this column with the famous GWB “Mission Accomplished” picture, whereas the online version had the Obama “war room” pic. Much less trenchant.]
