At Bloomberg “transfer” schools, more students drop out than graduate

“The city’s second-chance high schools saw more students drop out than graduate in 2011-12 — a major drop in performance compared to a year earlier, a Post analysis found.”

Not only does Bloomberg think his mayoralty has been a great education success, so do several of the people running the succeed him.

Bloomberg’s education department could learn a thing or two

“In his 2009 book Drive, author Daniel Pink examined decades of social experiments that described [job satisfaction] in terms of “extrinsic” and “intrinsic” motivators. The “extrinsic” motivators consist of traditional carrot and stick rewards such as cash bonuses or punishment – the reward environment in which waiters work.

“The “intrinsic” motivators are internal desires to do good work or create a successful product – the goal of many people working in the theatre. Pink’s argument is that, in the modern workplace, the “extrinsic” system of rewards is often a less effective motivator, but one on which too many managers still rely. In fact, there is no greater myth in managing a team or company than believing financial compensation is a sufficient incentive to engage and retain top talent and drive high performance.”

Bloomberg seems to think that he can bully or bribe teachers into doing a better job. To date, he’s been proven wrong.

Bloomberg plans to use wealth to fight City Council stop-and-frisk foes

When New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s political action committee, Independence USA, spent $12 million last year to campaign against City Council members who opposed gun control and gay marriage, I thought it was pretty neat.

Now it comes back to bite me in the ass.

According to the NY Post, Bloomberg is planning to use some of his fortune to fight against the re-election of councilmembers who vote to override his veto of a bill that curtails stop-and-frisk.

Suddenly, his throwing his weight around doesn’t seem fair.

Bloomberg is $2 BILLION dollars over budget on Croton Water Filtration Plant, but $100 million under on his promise to build parks and playgrounds

One friend recently said about Bloomberg, “At least he made the trains run on time.” Not hardly. If you scroll through this blog, you’ll find example after example of mismanagement, fraud and cost overruns. The best you can say is that Bloomberg is not stealing to line his own pockets.

Back in 2004, Bloomberg promised nearly $200 million in improvements to parks and playgrounds in the Bronx in order to win City Council and state Legislature approval of a new water filtration plant under the Mosholu Golf Course in the Bronx. The project, originally projected to cost $1.2 billion, is now at $3.5 billion. But the parks and playgrounds are a different story. There, the mayor only spent half the promised money.

In fact, the last public program that Bloomberg got right was the 311 system, and that was in the first year of his first term.

H/t to MrMild for this one.

Citi Bike stations moved to make way for limousines

‘[New York City] has quietly removed at least 10 Citi Bike stations since May, The Post has learned — including racks at Barry Diller’s IAC Building in Chelsea, a Midtown East condo that’s home to millionaires and a West Soho co-op where a “Mad Men” star lives.’

Bloomberg’s $73 million 911 system crashes twice

It’s yet another Bloomberg tech program failure. This one was seven YEARS late and has already crashed twice. But it’s not news to faithful BITEME reader, since we covered this scandal in depth last year.

Other Bloomberg tech failures include the homeless shelter scandal, CityTime boondoggle, the botched ARIS program. and the screwed up NYCHA computers.

If there’s one thing media-mogul Bloomberg can NOT do well, it’s implement a high-level high-tech system.

Bloomberg to taxicab owners: “After January, I am going to destroy all you fucking guys.”

Having lost a court decision over his “Taxi of Tomorrow,” Hizzoner isn’t about to give up: his new plan is to destroy the cab industry after leaving office, as he explained to Taxi Club Management CEO Gene Freidman when the two met at Madison Square Garden’s private 1879 Club during last Thursday’s Knick playoff game.

According to one witness, Mayor Bloomberg promised to “destroy your fucking industry.”

I could mock him for losing his cool, revile him for being a sore loser, or nominate him for BITE ME’s Man of the Year Award. I think I’ll just quote Jon Bon Jovi: “You’re an asshole.”

Mayor Bloomberg in early April Fools gag predicts that one day, surveillance cameras and even drones will be watching nearly everyone in New York

With tongue — presumably — planted firmly in his cheek, Mayor Bloomberg said Friday it will soon be impossible to escape the eye of Big Brother in the city.

“You wait, in five years, the technology is getting better, they’ll [sic!] be cameras every place,” Bloomberg said during his weekly radio appearance. “Get used to it — whether you like it or not.”…

Bloomberg secretly funneled $9 million in city property taxes to Hudson Yards project

The troubled Hudson Yards project is perennially in need of cash and Bloomberg found some $9 million worth through creative accounting. The bill was supposed to be paid for by property taxes on new construction in the area, but the city decided to deem several pre-existing buildings as “new construction” so it could shift the tax dollars to prop up Hudson Yards.

Jewish parochial schools in Brooklyn don’t meet state and federal education requirements

‘Under New York state and federal regulations, all New York schools, public and private, are required to offer “equivalency of instruction” in basic general subjects such as American history and math. . . .

‘More than a dozen parents, teachers and students told DNAinfo.com New York that many of Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish schools fall shy of even that narrow requirement, offering only an hour or two a day of pro-forma instruction for general subjects, if any.

‘ “There are a number of schools which have absolutely no pretenses of it — kids from 3-years-old to 18 have no secular education at all, ” said Zalman Alpert, a librarian at Yeshiva University and an expert on the Orthodox community. ‘

Read the article and you’ll find that Bloomberg’s Department of Education, which, under the law, regulates parochial schools, makes no effort to ensure that Jewish parochial school students get an adequate education.
