Larry McShane of the Daily News tries to hog all the credit

Larry McShane breathlessly writes in the Daily News:

They turned charity into cold-hearted cash. A shocking federal lawsuit charges four phony philanthropies, all purportedly aiding cancer victims, spent their $187 million in donations on Caribbean cruises, Disney World trips and dating services.

It’s all true, but it’s all old news.

Almost a year ago, the Tampa Bay Times and The Center for Investigative Reporting did an actual investigative report on the Reynolds charity combine. From the Tampa Bay Times article: “To track the family connections, the Times and CIR reviewed thousands of pages of financial records and investigative documents from regulators in eight states, interviewed vendors and recipients and traced donations from the phone banks to their ultimate destination.”

All Larry McShane did was read some press releases and make some phone calls. That, and deprive the Tampa Bay Times of the credit for breaking the story.

Still, there was some actual “news” here: the FTC and some state attorneys general have finally acted. But you’d never know that from Larry McShane’s sloppy article.

Rand Paul adopts Rose Garden strategy

President Rand Paul is adopting the traditional stance of incumbent presidents and trying to look “presidential” while keeping substantive interviews to a minimum. He won’t talk about abortion, Iran, and corporate tax breaks.

He’s also getting good at putting girl reporters in their place.

Not ready for prime time: Rand Paul gets testy when asked basic questions about abortion.

Wingnut screws Cornell; Liberals ain’t got nuthin’

Prankster James O’Keefe tricked a Cornell University dean into saying nice things about ISIS and Hamas — on camera.

It’s hardly news: people say dumb shit all the time. Mostly they seem to be right-wingers but O’Keefe has occasionally gotten some naif to do likewise.

The story has been blared all over the right-wing media. If you doubt me, just do a web search on the name of the dean in question, Joseph Scaffido.

What’s interesting is the weakness of the non-wingnut media’s response. Salon called the O’Keefe piece a “hit job” but was otherwise pretty toothless. The Cornell student paper was similarly wishy-washy. The mainstream media seems to be ignoring the story.

But the Bitemaster will now step up to the plate and reveal that he’s been hearing rumors that O’Keefe just creates his videos in a studio, using advanced CGI, paid for by the Iranians. Why would Iran care? Because the cost — thought to be in the low eight figures — is cheaper than developing or purchasing ordnance that could be used against the US.

Bill O’Reilly gets swiftboated and it’s about fucking time

Finally some people have decided to emulate the Republican playbook and totally destroy a person’s reputation. It was done to Ed Muskie by the vile Donald Segretti, to Michael Dukakis by the equally vile Roger Ailes, and to John Kerry by the superlatively vile John O’Neill.

Now hoards of reporters who served alongside O’Reilly have emerged to impeach his credibility and skewer extravagant stories he has been peddling all these years.

Another shoe drops: Bill O’Reilly’s ex-colleagues call his L.A. riot stories ‘completely fictitious’.
