Satanists Demand Religious Exemption From Abortion Restrictions, Cite Hobby Lobby Ruling

The Satanic Temple has launched a campaign seeking a religious exemption from certain anti-abortion laws that attempt to dissuade women from ending a pregnancy. In light of the Supreme Court’s recent Hobby Lobby decision, the group says they have deeply held beliefs about bodily autonomy and scientific accuracy, and those beliefs are violated by state-level “informed consent” laws that rely on misleading information about abortion risks.

Normally, we think atheists and satanists are dicks. But apparently the Satanic Temple once held a rally in support of Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) for approving a bill that allows prayer in public schools, saying they’re glad the new policy will allow children to pray to Satan. Ouch!

EdenSoy comes out against birth control — really!

Michael Potter, CEO of Eden Foods, said through his attorney:

“In accordance with his Catholic faith, Potter believes that any action which either before, at the moment of, or after sexual intercourse, is specifically intended to prevent procreation, whether as an end or means — including abortifacients and contraception — is wrong.”

Pope Francis makes it cool to be Catholic; but Cardinal Dolan just spouts the old bullshit

‘According to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the current Archbishop of New York, women don’t need insurance coverage for birth control because they can purchase it at “any shop on the street,” including a gas station like 7-11.’

So the old fart thinks you can waltz into a gas station and buy birth control pills — without a prescription, yet. Clearly it’s been a long time since he last tried it.

NY police handcuff shooting victims to their hospital beds

Yup, if you’re shot in NY City, the police will check if you have any outstanding warrants. If you do, they handcuff you to your hospital bed for the duration of your stay. If doctors want to examine you, the police have to unlock you first.

Here’s a thought: Why not chain the prisoner to the bed? That way, they could move about while not being able to escape.

NYU Langone philanthropist compares anti-rich rhetoric to Hitler’s Germany

“I hope it’s not working,” Ken Langone, the billionaire co-founder of Home Depot and major GOP donor, said of populist political appeals. “Because if you go back to 1933, with different words, this is what Hitler was saying in Germany. You don’t survive as a society if you encourage and thrive on envy or jealousy.”

Maine Gov. Paul LePage — another asshole

Fatal heroin overdoses in Maine quadrupled from 2011 to 2012 but asshole Gov. Paul LePage opposes a bill that would put Naloxone (a drug that can reverse overdoses from heroin and other opioids like morphine) in the hands of police, firefighters, at-risk users and their families.

But much worse, LePage also vetoed a bill last year to create “Good Samaritan” protections from prosecution for drug possession for people who call 911 when they suspect a companion has overdosed. In other words, if you’re doing drugs with a friend and you OD, your friend has a disincentive to call for help.

And that’s why LePage can Bite Me.

New York City reserves the right to sell your protected health information to the highest bidder

Some eagle eye at the New York Post noticed that one of the last acts of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg was to revise the privacy policy of the New York City Fire Department to include this language: “We may also use and disclose your PHI [Protected Health Information] for certain marketing and fundraising activities.”

It will, no doubt, improve my user experience.

Can a corporation have a religion?

“The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to consider religious objections made by corporations to a provision of the 2010 federal healthcare law requiring employers to provide health insurance that covers birth control. . . .

“The key question before the court in the two cases it agreed to hear is whether corporations should be treated the same as individuals when making free exercise of religion claims under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and a 1993 federal law called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
