Satanists Demand Religious Exemption From Abortion Restrictions, Cite Hobby Lobby Ruling

The Satanic Temple has launched a campaign seeking a religious exemption from certain anti-abortion laws that attempt to dissuade women from ending a pregnancy. In light of the Supreme Court’s recent Hobby Lobby decision, the group says they have deeply held beliefs about bodily autonomy and scientific accuracy, and those beliefs are violated by state-level “informed consent” laws that rely on misleading information about abortion risks.

Normally, we think atheists and satanists are dicks. But apparently the Satanic Temple once held a rally in support of Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) for approving a bill that allows prayer in public schools, saying they’re glad the new policy will allow children to pray to Satan. Ouch!

“Recently, a Florida judge ruled that if the Orange County school district allowed Christian groups to disseminate Bibles and Christian-oriented religious materials in its schools, it would also have to allow atheist groups to do the same. . . .

“The Satanic Temple took advantage of this decision, deciding to flood Orange County schools with a pamphlet entitled The Satanic Children’s Big Book of Activities that contains kid-friendly Satanic lessons.”

  2. Regarding Satanic and Christian displays on the Michigan Capitol grounds:

Martin Diller, a 28-year-old who served two tours in Iraq with the Michigan National Guard and one in Afghanistan, visited the Capitol grounds after attending Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in East Lansing. He said he wanted to see how the constitutional rights issue played itself out.

“A few of my friends in the military, we like to see the First Amendment in use,” Diller said. “We all went overseas, we fought for it, it’s kind of interesting to see it in action.”

  3. Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt has promised to defend schools that distribute Bibles on campus against “veiled legal threats.” Good for him! Pruitt’s defense of religious freedom will now open the Oklahoma schools to the Church of Ahriman, a Satanist church in Oklahoma City, which has asked for permission to distribute Satanist literature in an elementary school.
