Right-wing violence on the rise

‘ “Although in the 1990s the average number of attacks per year was 70.1, the average number of attacks per year in the first 11 years of the twenty-first century was 307.5, a rise of more than 400%,” writes Dr. Arie Perliger, Director of Terrorism Studies at the CTC.’

Hmmm. Maybe we shouldn’t give up our guns just yet.

Taking my advice, Subway says “Footlong” is just a name

“With regards to the size of the bread and calling it a footlong, “SUBWAY FOOTLONG” is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for the sub sold in Subway Restaurants and not intended to be a measurement of length,” the chain posted on its Australian Facebook page in response to a customer’s complaint.

Which is just what I said three days ago.

Casey’s sues Subway over rights to ‘footlong’

The Subway sandwich chain is trying to trademark “footlong” and is issuing cease-and-desist letters to other companies that use the term. Some companies, such as Pizza Hut, are opposing the trademark registration.

I don’t see what the problem is — Subway’s sandwich isn’t 12″ long, it’s only 11″. I can foresee the day when I see a poster that urges me to buy a Subway footlong(TM) with an asterisk to a footnote that says “Subway’s registered trademark for it’s 11″ hero sandwich.”

Even the Koch Brothers Agree with Me on the Debt Ceiling

As far as I know, not raising the debt ceiling could push the US over a fiscal cliff into the murky swamp of default. It wouldn’t be good for Dave and Charlie Koch and it wouldn’t be good for me.

That said, I think we’re going to have to do major surgery on Social Security (e.g., lower benefits, raise the age of eligibility, raise the cap on contributions). And I don’t believe the current Medicare regime is sustainable either — we’re going to have to reform that, too.

So do I align with the Dems or the Repugs?

I believe the Dems will screw me through incompetence, and the Repugs will screw me because they want to. I’ll stay with the Dems, thank you.

Satanists Support Fla. Gov. Rick Scott And His ‘Defense Of Religious Liberty’

In March, 2012, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed SB 98 into law, allowing students to read inspirational messages of their choosing at assemblies and sporting events. It went into effect on July 12.

In a response that I dearly wish I had thought up, the Satanic Temple is holding a rally to support Scott because he “has shown unwavering fortitude and progressive resolve in his defense of religious liberty.”

I love this, even though I think the Satanic Temple is a hoax. Their website looks good but includes no officers, no contact information, no times or places for meetings. And their domain name was registered two weeks before the Governor signed SB 98 into law.

Anyway, good for the Satanists. Next, they should ask for school vouchers.

Glenn Hubbard, Leading Academic and Mitt Romney Advisor, Took $1200 an Hour to Be Countrywide’s Expert Witness

Glenn Hubbard,  Dean of Columbia’s business school, testified on behalf of Countrywide in a lawsuit. His analysis concluded that Countrywide’s loans weren’t any worse than the loans produced by other mortgage originators, and that therefore the monstrous losses that investors in those loans suffered were due to other factors related to the economic crisis – and not caused by the serial misrepresentations and fraud in Countrywide’s underwriting.
