In new world of scientific journals, anything goes

“The number of these journals and conferences has exploded in recent years as scientific publishing has shifted from a traditional business model for professional societies and organizations built almost entirely on subscription revenues to open access, which relies on authors or their backers to pay for the publication of papers online, where anyone can read them.. . . some researchers are now raising the alarm about what they see as the proliferation of online journals that will print seemingly anything for a fee. They warn that nonexperts doing online research will have trouble distinguishing credible research from junk.”

Sounds like a libertarian’s version of heaven.

Bill Maher says Paul Ryan and Rand Paul ruined Libertarianism for him

“To everyone who keeps trying to shame me about abandoning my Libertarian moorings, my message is this: I didn’t go nuts, this movement did. Like when you see a stop light, your reaction should be ‘Great, an easy way to ensure we don’t all crash into each other,’ not, ‘How dare the government tell me when I can and cannot go!”

Libertarianism has a long and honorable history in the United States, but it’s not very practical for running a complex, crowded, industrial country. Glad to see that Bill finally figured that out.

An Open Letter to (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me

High school senior Suzy Lee Weiss has written a bittersweet complaint about her college rejections, which you can read here:

Sure, she’s unhappy, but she’s funny when she writes about it. I think she’ll turn out ok.

On the other hand, check out this item about people calling the NYU admissions office to complain their (or their children’s) rejection. Wotta bunch of whiners!

Salon.com bashes Clinton consultants

“Mark Penn is just the worst example of the general Clinton family habit of associating with the most repulsive party hacks the Democrats have to offer. Her campaign was a dream team of generally useless hacks, from sweatered communications director Howard Wolfson to charmless fundraiser Terry McAuliffe to ill-tempered Harold Ickes (who, unlike the rest of the campaign, at least seemed mostly competent). These are the same Clintons who are responsible for the national stature, such as it is, of Dick Morris. In general, the Clintons run with a pretty lousy crowd. (And this is not even getting into Bill Clinton’s many gross rich man-child “friends,” like Ron Burkle.)”

We here at BITEME are certainly no Morris fans, but leaving out any mention of how he helped engineer Cinton victories in 1978, 1982, and 1996 is just plain dishonest.
