Maybe the problem isn’t guns but a messed up mental health system

Since the Newtown shootings, the right has blamed a lack of God in the classroom (see our recent post on Mike “I used to be the smart conservative” Huckabee) while nearly everyone else has been blaming American gun culture.

I think both sides are victims of a kind of mass hysteria. Remember when juvenile delinquency was caused by rock & roll? Then by comic books? Then by video games? I think in frightening times, we latch onto simple explanations that confirm our preconceived world view.

But Liza Long, mother of a child given to violent outbursts, has written movingly about how hard it is for the families of such kids — mostly boys — to get  the help they need.

GOP says it’s time for more guns!

“In the wake of the mass killing that claimed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school Friday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) made the case Sunday that the answer to preventing massacres in the U.S. is for more Americans to carry guns . . . Gohmert argued that the mass slaughter would have gone differently if Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung had been armed.”

Guess who’s reading your email TO Gmail accounts?

According to attorney Richard M. Golomb, who has sued Google in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida, the Google user agreement means “Google can intercept your emails and use them for direct marketing purposes,” but, says Golomb, “they are also intercepting emails of the non-Gmail account holder, in violation of wiretap laws in some states.”

Oh, for the good old days when we thought Bill Gates was the great Satan.

7-year-old shot, dies in parking lot; would be alive if he were armed

Joseph V. Loughrey was getting into his truck when his 9 mm handgun discharged, wounding son Craig in the chest. The boy died at the scene at Twigs Reloading Den, north of Pittsburgh. If the kid had planned better, he would have carried something to fight back with.

New Mormon website asks gay Mormons to ‘Stay with us’

Don’t expect to see gay Mormon weddings anytime soon, but the Mormon church has launched a new website aimed at providing “greater sensitivity and better understanding” among Mormons with regards to same-sex attraction.

Valerie Larabee, executive director of the Utah Pride Center, said, “Having a resource whose purpose is to help Mormon families and leadership recognize the ways they can reduce the isolation and rejection often felt by LGBTQ or questioning Mormons is a huge step in the right direction.”

Women should be barefoot, pregnant . . . and ARMED!

On Fox News’ The Five, the hosts argued that women in domestic violence situations would be able to protect themselves better if they were armed.

“Honey, does this dress make me look fat?”

“No! Absolutely not! Now please put the gun down.”

Top executives respond to Schumer’s call

Back in November, NY Sen. Chuck Schumer said he hoped business executives would speak out more forcefully for action on the nation’s fiscal problems. “I am hopeful that with the business community’s help and with the president’s leadership, we can bring Republicans around,” Schumer said.

Well, his wishes have come true. Several wealthy executives have now come out in favor of tax increases on the wealthy. These aren’t soak-the-rich socialists, just realists who can see that balancing the budget will take cuts AND revenue.
